A warning has been issued about the impact the upcoming cold spell could pose to vulnerable people
A cold health alert has been issued for the East Midlands with a warning an upcoming cold spell could pose a risk to vulnerable people and a rise in deaths. The Met Office has issued two weather warnings for New Year's Day for 'heavy and persistent snow' and strong winds in parts of the UK.
Now, the UK Health and Security Agency has issued a cold health alert for the region, warning of the impact the weather could have on health and social care services. The alert is valid from 9am on New Year's Day until 9am on Saturday, January 4. A UKHSA spokesperson said: "There is potential for significant impacts across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, we may also see impacts on younger age groups; a likely increase in demand for health services; impacts on the workforce affecting delivery of services and challenges keeping indoor temperatures at the recommended 18°C leading to more risk to vulnerable people.
Andy Page, chief forecaster with the Met Office, said: “There is a very complicated weather forecast for the UK with snow, strong winds and heavy rain all feature for parts of the UK. Almost the entire UK is covered by at least one weather warning during the coming week. With such a varied and complex weather situation there is potential for the pattern of warnings to shift and possibly escalate in some areas.
“With lots of celebrations and people on the move over the coming days, we are urging everyone to keep checking the forecast so they can update their plans.”
