The company that would become Aston Martin started out as a car dealership. In 1912, Englishmen Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin partnered up to sell cars, but soon after they decided to build their own models. Their first prototype debuted in 1915, named in honor of Martin, a racing driver, and his favorite racing venue, Aston Hills. Thus, the name Aston Martin was born. Aston Martin co-founder Lionel Martin wasn’t just a keen racing driver—he was an all-out speed demon.
