Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Due to the overwhelming prominence of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, plenty of movie franchises deserved a better legacy than what they received. While there were lots of series that started strong with a great first movie, or even a few strong entries, it was always disappointing to see this legacy tarnished with subpar movies as the years went on.
The reason that the legacy of Jaws found itself deteriorating due to the three sequels was not just that they were of lower quality than the original, but because the prime reason the film worked in the first place was the unseen nature of the shark. The slow-building tension feeling of helplessness in Jaws was lost after the reveal of the shark, and later movies tended to give the great white sea monster much-increased levels of screen time.
6 Rambo Rambo deserved a franchise whose sequels were as insightful as its original Close The Rambo series started so well with two incredible action movies starring Sylvester Stallone as PTSB-suffering U.S. Special Forces veteran John Rambo, but its legacy was tarnished by increasingly absurd sequels.
While Arnold Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of the T-800 has been the most consistently enjoyable thing about the Terminator series, the franchise’s story of the self-aware AI intelligence Skynet and its impending war against humanity was told so many times that it lost its power over the decades. There were later franchise highlights, such as the excellent TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but with the first two movies being so iconic, one can’t help but feel the series deserved better.
The Die Hard franchise saw McClane continually finding himself in one disaster after another where he was the only man with the skills to save the day. While this was an enjoyable action movie fun, the disposable nature of many of the Die Hard sequels meant that the overall legacy of the series was tarnished by them.
