But an eyewitness has died since the first trial.
Published: May. 29, 2024 at 6:33 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Nearly eight years after being found guilty of second-degree murder, 47-year-old Chad Zurlo ’s case returned Wednesday before a new jury and a new judge. The 47-year-old is accused of murdering his quasi-landlord, Steven Corcoran, on May 8, 2014. Zurlo’s retrial began with attorneys’ opening statements Wednesday that sought to outline the 10-year-old sequence of events for the jury, albeit in two different lights.
“It was because he was angry at Steve Corcoran over all the arguments that they had, and he snapped — his own words to his significant other, right after this happened,” he continued, referring to a conversation between Zurlo and his then-girlfriend, Serena Vallier, the night Corcoran was shot. Vallier testified at Zurlo’s original trial but has since died.
But court documents say Zurlo’s lack of a Commercial Driver’s License drove a wedge between the men, causing numerous arguments between them. Vallier also told investigators that Corcoran entered their living space uninvited more than once while drunk and yelling threats at Zurlo. “And then Mr. Zurlo saw Mr. Corcoran, who was saying ‘I could end you,’ reach behind his back,” Hedland said. “ instinctively reacted, grabbed his firearm, shot one time.”Wednesday’s proceedings mark the beginning Zurlo’s second round in the defendant’s seat. He was previously convicted of second-degree murder and acquitted of first-degree murder after a 2016 trial.
