Parliamentary security committee issues ‘please explain’ on Clare O’Neil’s terror relistingSky News can reveal the chair of the Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security issued Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil with a 'please explain' notice last week over what appears to be a bungled terrorist relisting process by her department. Chair Peter Khalil wrote to his Labor colleague on behalf of the committee on September 6, asking for clarification on Ms O'Neil’s endorsement in relisting of Boko Haram, Islamic State and Islamic State West Africa and whether she had in fact written to the Attorney-General as is usually the case. Last month, Sky News revealed Ms O'Neil had not provided important written support for the June relisting in a move that would increase tension between Ms O'Neil and the Attorney-General over their division of responsibilities. The Counter-Terrorism Coordination Centre's First Assistant Secretary Chris Field responded to the letter on Monday, confirming an 'administrative error' had been behind the lack of formal written input from the minister. The measure acts as a deterrent to would-be terrorists and puts the public on notice that being a member of or providing donations to a listed group is a serious criminal offence.
