Indigenous Australians Shadow Minister Julian Leeser says Elder Galarrwuy Yunupingu was “one of the greatest” leaders modern Australia has produced after Mr Yunupingu died today aged 74.

“We gather on a day for Australians which is particularly sad … Yunupingu was one of the greatest Indigenous leaders modern Australia has produced … was a man of strength, conviction and determination,” Mr Leeser said during the National Press Club of Australia conference on Monday.

“He did what few could do, he fought, and he built, he fought for rights, for freedoms and for respect, and he worked in partnership to deliver land, education, jobs and opportunity, we remember Yunupingu today, we mourn Yunupingu today, may his memory be a blessing.”
