Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says AUKUS is the “single biggest investment” into Australian defence capabilities in history.
“Over the years to come, many billions of dollars creating jobs, creating innovation, making the best of Australian science, technology, innovation, here in Defence industries,” Mr Albanese said at a media conference on Monday.
“This is an exciting project, AUKUS is the single biggest investment in Australia’s defence capability in our history. “This will create some 20,000 jobs directly over the next 30 years, it will strengthen Australia’s national security and contribute to regional stability in response to the unprecedented regional challenges which we are facing.”

James Webb telescope ‘confirms’ TRAPPIST-1 exoplanet has ‘no atmosphere’The James Webb Space Telescope has found an Earth-sized planet but with no atmosphere. ANU astrophysicist and cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker says this is part of the 'TRAPPIST-1 system,' which was discovered quite a few years ago and contained seven rocky planets. Governments ‘hideously unprepared’ for safeguard mechanism ‘mode shift’Pacific National CEO Paul Scurrah says rail has been the “most environmentally friendly” and safe way to haul goods but the safeguard mechanism will hit the railway freight systems. “For many years now, everybody knows that rail has been the most environmentally friendly and safe way to haul goods, particularly between capital cities, and is even more important now with the climate action required,” Mr Scurrah told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood. “What we see though is governments have been hideously unprepared for this mode shift … driven by the unlevel playing field between rail and the trucking industry and what this now means is that there’s a further impost on rail operators to … reduce our carbon emissions … the safeguard mechanism as it currently stands actually doesn’t help.”
