A bison is seen walking along a road in Wyoming's Hayden Valley, on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, in Yellowstone National Park.
The woman from Greenville, South Carolina, was near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake on Saturday when the bison lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns, park officials said in a statement. The woman sustained serious injuries and was taken to a medical clinic in the park and then flown to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.Officials said the bison was defending its space. The attack is being investigated.
Yellowstone requires people to keep at least 25 yards away from all large animals, including bison, elk, deer and moose, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. The park said bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. Officials said bison are not aggressive animals but will defend their space when threatened, are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.. It was the first reported incident of a Yellowstone visitor being hurt by a bison in 2024. The Idaho man was later charged with being under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct, and approaching and disturbing wildlife.
