The Bears could be in position to select Williams in the 2024 draft. Does his performance against Notre Dame on Saturday change anything?
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Caleb Williams couldn’t stop moving. The quarterback stretched his face, scratched his back and nodded his head when USC coach Lincoln Riley spoke. Williams rocked back and forth. A lot. And then it was his turn to explain the to Notre Dame on Saturday night. Williams was 23-for-37 for 199 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions and six sacks. Advertisement “I made mistakes that I usually don’t make,” Williams said.
Defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio grazed Williams’ pass. But still: No one looked open. After Watts’ 23-yard return, Notre Dame running back Audric Estime scored for a 17-3 lead. All three of Williams’ interceptions turned into points for the Irish. On Saturday, I saw everything that scouts have highlighted about Williams. He clearly possesses rare playmaking ability. He’s dangerous on the run. He had a 38-yard touchdown run on an option negated by a holding penalty.
