It was originally published as a serial over the course of 10 months in 1859, in Charles Dickens’ periodical magazine. In 1860 it was released in full as a three-volume set – but Collins worried this would mean anyone could read the whole story and ruin it for others.
The concept has been around for centuries, then, but the first recorded usage of the word was in the US magazinein 1971.
