The SpaceTime Blade is 1.7 meters long and, at first glance, appears to be made of a long glass hollow that displays time.
If you are lost in the countless LEDs and LCDs around you and are seeking a rare feat of human engineering for your collection, Urwerk’s SpaceTime Blade is what you need. The Light Saber design isn’t the only thing that stands out.Geneva-based Urwerk is known for its outlandish designs that make no attempts to fit into the mainstream. Whether one looks at the placement of the dials or the materials used to make its case, Urwerk’s pieces fit no measure of a regular wristwatch.
The design is first carved into wax, which allows the finest details to be added. The wax is then sealed in a molding medium like plaster, and molten bronze is poured in through a series of small holes. The wax melts away, and the bronze takes its place. After cooling, the mold is split open to reveal the bronze base, which is refined further by polishing. The time-displaying mechanism in the SpaceTime Blade is also unique. It is not the standard LCD/ LED display you see on modern devices.
Each Nixie bulb comprises 88 components that need to be assembled by hand. Thus, the SpaceTime Blade has 1,446 components that have been put together to display the year, month, day, hour, minute, and second – down to the 1/100th fraction.
