C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan–Atlas could be visible to the naked eye
Get ready to see a comet not spotted from Earth since the Stone Age.Those looking skywards in the early evening may catch sight of the celestial body bombing through space which was last seen from Earth byIt is a comet that is believed to have originated from the Oort Cloud, a vast spherical shell of rocky, icy and dusty material surrounding our solar system.
It was first discovered by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China on 9 January last year, and independently by Atlas in South Africa on 22 February 2023, hence its name.are large objects made of dust and ice, which orbit the Sun and are best known for their long, streaming tails.Follow-up observations of the object spotted in China and South Africa revealed it had a tail and so it was designated a comet.
However, Dr Robert Massey, from the Royal Astronomical Society said: “People are asking whether this will be some kind of ‘comet of the century’. I don’t personally think that’s very likely.
