A heartbreaking loss led to a fierce Mexican shootout, but the wait for justice goes on
It was the chance of a lifetime for talented footballer Mike Jones, when he scored an opportunity to coach the New York Red Bulls.
At 4.30am, Mike parted company with his girlfriend and left to walk home from a party in Chelsea, New York. He set to work trawling CCTV but said it was difficult to get footage when everything in the area was closed. Within 60 hours, the team had identified a suspect, Orlando Orea, who they believed had mistaken Mike for a man who intervened in a row between the suspect and a woman in a nearby bar. Video footage showed the pair arguing on West 14th Street, shortly before Mike was killed.
Phil said: “For the first two years after Michael’s death, we felt the authorities in New York did all they could possibly do at that time. In spite of all of our efforts, sadly, we have come to the conclusion that Michael’s murderer will never be brought to justice. It is something we just have had to come to terms with and learn to live with.”
But when they arrived at his hiding place, a shootout took place in which two detectives - Victor Suarez Diaz and Luis Alberto Luna - were shot dead. One of the Interpol agents died at the scene and the other at a nearby hospital hours later.
