“They may come into the program and be looking at a felony charge, but they complete the program it’s reduced to a misdemeanor,” Hennigan said. Hagens was facing felony charges. She said she was selling drugs to simultaneously keep up with her addiction and make ends meet to take care of her children.

Participants show up to drug court once a week, do a meeting every day, therapy twice a week, and community service. According to Hagens, it can be intimidating for these parents to step into a courtroom, especially when they are facing incarceration and possibly losing custody of their kids at the same time.However, Hennigan said the Drug Wellness Court is designed to make everyone involved feel supported every step of the way, including in the Children and Youth courtroom.

“I like to think that our program is creating a safer environment, where parents can get help and stay with their families,” Hennigan said.She reflected on her time in drug court, saying the most challenging part of it was being told that she was a bad mother.
