Glencore announced the “operational changes” on Wednesday, saying it had notified workers the underground work would close after 60 years.
Some 1000 jobs have been cast under a cloud with mining giant Glencore set to stop copper mining in Mount Isa within two years.
After conducting reviews and studies to extend the life of the mines, they were ultimately found to have reached the end of their lives. Australian Workers Union Queensland secretary Stacey Schinnerl said the day was incredibly sad for the community and called for state government and Glencore support for workers.Schinnerl said this should be through fast-tracked approvals for new mines in the region and redeployment opportunities through a winding-back of foreign and FIFO labour at other sites.
