Satellite images show the extent of the damage as one of the biggest reservoirs of water in the world drains across war-ravaged Ukraine.
The water in Ukraine's Nova Kakhovka dam has surged downstream, flooding villages, threatening food and water supplies, and changing Russia's war.
The Dnipro River is immense and the man-made reservoir built within it is among the biggest in the world. "There is also the possibility, of course, that pre-existing structural damage to the dam eventually caused breakage and flooding, as some sources have additionally suggested, although reports of noises like explosions are not necessarily consistent with this notion."The dam wall was used as a bridge and its destruction severs a key crossing of Ukraine's most important river.
Russia had advanced beyond the river to occupy Kherson, but Ukrainian forces pushed them back at the end of last year.
