A homeowner describes their plan to create a garden inspired by the Edwardian style of Gertrude Jekyll and the symbolism of the red and white roses.
I have an old black and white photograph of my house, on a postcard sent in 1904 by the Hallam family, residents at the time, wishing their friend Mrs North of Wakefield a merry Christmas. The garden was clearly a source of great pride to the Hallams, very much in the style of legendary Edwardian gardener Gertrude Jekyll, with great old roses festooning the front of the house, walled garden and large borders by the front lawn. I want to put a bit of Gertrude back into my beds.
In 1983 he realised his ultimate rose ambition creating Graham Thomas, named after the British horticulturalist. While David Austin was beavering away at his bushes in Shropshire, over in Norfolk another man was doing the same. Peter Beales was raised by his grandparents on their smallholding, and recalls being captivated in his pushchair by a pink rose he suspects was Dorothy Perkins. Aged four he recalled being overwhelmed by the scent and beauty of a rose named Great Maiden’s Blush .
