Lawmakers should realize that TikTok is an important means of exporting our popular culture to global society

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a bill that could make way for a nationwide prohibition on TikTok. “Take that, Gen Z!” some elderly lawmaker is probably snickering from a Washington Congressional office right now. A number of civil-society organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, are raising the alarm about government censorship.
When it comes to civil rights and international trade law, China should be nobody’s role model. The Chinese Communist Party has long censored social media willy-nilly, including blocking Facebook, YouTube, X and more. It’s a point of pride that the U.S. isn’t like China. Fighting fire with fire by banning TikTok isn’t worth compromising free expression, one of our country’s founding principles.
