"He was under contract at Universal, so his biography, every answer he gave in an interview, every photograph…everything was staged, everything was curated to present this image,"Rock Hudson and his studio bosses knew that coming out was simply not an option. As the documentary also shows, the actor was a proud conservative in his private life, befriending the likes of fellow actor-turned Republican president Ronald Reagan, and his wife Nancy. In fact, it was Nancy Reagan who urged a noticeably gaunt looking Rock Hudson to get a mole on his neck checked after she was shocked by his appearance at a White House ball in May 1984.
Rock Hudson was one of the first celebrities to disclose his AIDS diagnosis and died in 1985 of an AIDS-related illness."It was a huge story worldwide. He was the first famous person to die of AIDS and at the same time he came out as a gay man," Kijak says.As the doco shows, Hudson's death, and the shock waves it produced, helped bring HIV/AIDS out of the shadows and into the mainstream."People really forget those years.
"These are like real movie gods and goddesses. He has had this diminished legacy, so I think it's a good time to reappraise and really look at his body of work."
