Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin says: 'I expect the number of referrals will further increase and all cases will be meticulously investigated by a team of skilled and professional investigators'

More than 100 families' horrific birth stories at Nottingham Trent University Hospitals have been referred to the police as an independent review into the failings continues. A total of 1,998 families have already come forward to share their experiences with the review, which is the largest in NHS history and follows hundreds of baby deaths and injuries.

Including legal fees, £101m was paid in maternity negligence claims against NUH between 2006 and 2023. Ms Ockenden revealed the force wishes to investigate all cases scrutinised during the review. She said: "We're in the process of sending material to the police on request regularly." Ms Ockenden added that the trust has listened to the feedback she provided regarding the "long history in staff describing poor behaviours in terms of bullying and harassment". She said: "They're looking at the culture within the service and what can be done to improve it.

She said: "It's absolutely beautiful and it has a homeliness about it. It's very warm, beautiful lighting, they have the loveliest family play areas and the space for families is beautiful as well.
