Simon Bradley's new book explores 200 years of British railway history, presented in bite-sized chapters covering each year with accompanying illustrations. From the early days of cuttings and tunnels to political upheavals like nationalisation and privatisation, this engaging read offers a unique perspective on the evolution of the UK's railway system.
The title of this book capitalises on the similarity of Simon Bradley’s name to that of George Bradshaw, begetter of Bradshaw’s Guides: timetables and railway handbooks widely consulted for at least a century from the 1840s onwards.
From 1882, you could post a letter directly into a carriage of a mail train if you bought a supplementary ha’penny stamp. Shortly after 1942, when Ian Allan published his first ABC handbooks detailing locomotive types and numbers , some Birmingham schoolboys were expelled for selling stolen copies in the playground. The illustrations are wittily chosen.
