Getting a cool spell in July is a massive relief. Let's savor it.
From left, Arturo Coca, 8, Maricla Coca, 7, and Madalyn Lange, 5, walk through a water feature as they cool off from the heat during a visit to a sprayground Thursday, July 21, 2022 in Odessa, Texas. A poet once told us that April is the cruelest month, but here in Dallas we are more apt to name July. It is, after all, on average the hottest month of the year in a place where the heat is the main character in our summertime lives.
So what are we to make of this blessed cool streak that we are enjoying this week? Is it the universe balancing the scales after last year’s wretched heat dome had us pinned indoors for much of the middle of the month? We don’t know, and frankly we aren’t too keen to ask. There’s an old saying about gift horses.
There’s a good bit of rain in the forecast, too. Bring it, we say. So often this time of year, we are ready to do whatever dance it takes to get the sky to open a little on a parched city of cracking dirt and withered lawns. Whatever is happening, we will take it. We know August is just around the corner, and summer is far from done with us for 2024.So do yourself a favor. Give yourself a little space to get outside while the getting’s good. Go someplace you wouldn’t otherwise go this time of year. Sit in the park. Or stroll a lake.submit your letter here.
