The Australian Professional Leagues are set to introduce a men's team to Canberra and a new club to Auckland as they look to expand to blossoming markets.

abc.net.au/news/a-leagues-canberra-auckland-club-expansion-2024-25-season/102093336Canberra and Auckland are the next cities in line for A-Leagues club expansion with the Australian Professional Leagues on Tuesday confirming they plan to introduce a men's team to partner Canberra United, as well as a second New Zealand club, ahead of the 2024-25 season.

CEO Danny Townsend said the APL was now taking a different approach by instead identifying existing populations that were currently not represented by an entire A-Leagues club in order to "hit the ground running", having learned from the slow starts made by Western and Macarthur. "In the long term, they're going to be great clubs because they're going to grow with that community. I think what we're trying to do with these next two is drive into an [existing] passion for football and hunger for elite football, and Canberra and Auckland have got those attributes.

The ownership question is particularly tricky in the case of Canberra United, which is currently the only A-Leagues club still operated by its state federation, Capital Football. The ABC understands that the club has been looking for new ownership for the past two years as the revenues and resources offered by the federation, which also runs grassroots and NPL football, have not been able to keep up with those offered by other clubs that are privately owned.

"Federations like Football New South Wales and Football Victoria are not set up to run elite professional football clubs. [CF] are running a team at the moment. It's been really successful over the years, and we want to keep it that way, and we're working with CF to determine what that looks like."
