Senior government figures and activists have joined the chorus of voices calling on the Victorian Premier to take stronger action on Neo-Nazi salutes following a protest on the weekend.
About 20 neo-Nazi protesters joined the rally in Melbourne’s CBD on Saturday, gathering on the steps of the state parliament and making neo-Nazi salutes before clashing with police.
The Andrews government began taking active steps to outlaw the Nazi salute following an anti-trans rights rally which was crashed by neo-Nazis repeatedly performing the gesture in March this year. Dr Dvir Abramovich from the Anti Defamation Commission, who spearheaded a five-year national campaign to institute a ban on Nazi symbols, told SkyNews.com.au it was an"unacceptable reality" that parliament was yet to act.
"Now is the time to right a wrong and I call on the Victorian government to fast track the ban on the Nazi salute and to also examine outlawing any group that celebrates, promotes and glorifies Nazi ideology."Victoria Police, the Andrews government and the state’s opposition were all united in their condemnation of the rally, which came just two months after an anti-trans rights rally was crashed by neo-Nazis.
