TODAY'S EDITORIAL: A new and worthwhile use for an old tradition

A RECENTLY published study by Cambridge University has prompted calls to Pope Francis to reinstate the practice of 'meatless Fridays' for the Catholic faithful around the world due to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that would result. It is a unique take on an old tradition, but an eminently sensible idea, and it is encouraging that at least one Church leader here has enthusiastically embraced it.

Pascual, Radio Veritas president and Caritas Manila executive director, welcomed the suggestion of the Cambridge study, calling it 'very timely.' Pascual has long advocated meat-free Fridays, launching a campaign by Radio Veritas in 2016, which is still ongoing, urging the Filipino faithful to adopt the practice. He expressed the hope that the latest research would encourage the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines to also support the initiative.
