How many times will cameras follow the nation's favourite curmudgeon to the other side of the world?

down. The beloved actress famed for her eyebrow-raising talk show appearances has taken recent health setbacks as an opportunity for another televised trek aroundThis time the country she calls her “second home” is the backdrop to a personal venture: now aged 83 and feeling vulnerable, she is searching for guidance on how to adapt to a changing future.

Miriam with Zoe, a sex worker, in ‘Miriam Margolyes: A New Australian Adventure’ where migrants, many from Britain, have flocked in search of a better lifestyle, she embarked on a series of rather disconnected and uneven encounters. She was delighted by the courage of Georgia, a young British migrant who lives in her car, but she hated every second of a sailing race with the first female commodore of the Perth Yacht Club .

Where some segments were slight, others felt like they belonged to entirely different programmes. Margolyes’ meeting with escort Zoe for a frank discussion about the legality, status and stigma of sex work could have formed part of a wider show interrogating sexual practices and preferences . Meanwhile her visit to a synagogue and invitation to Shabbat dinner with a rabbi easily warranted a whole hour of meditation on faith and identity.

While Margolyes delivered on the eccentricities for which she is known and loved – swearing, blue humour and quips like “a fruit plate which is melon and melon is a bit like same-sex marriage…delicious” – this was window dressing for a selection of disparate, and sometimes irrelevant, interviews. And despite her moving ruminations on searching for connection with her fellow humans, there was an overwhelming sense of incohesion in this frustratingly aimless endeavour – part jaunty travel show, part sociological investigation and part personal journey. Ironic that a documentary about finding yourself ended up feeling so lost.
