Kirsten and Joe deeply love one another but are also dealing with their alcohol addiction as it wreaks havoc on their lives and family. Adapted from the 1962 film with Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon and the 1958 teleplay, , the musical stars Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James as the couple who are trying hard to forge a meaningful existence and hold their lives together for themselves and daughter during the 1950s., currently on Broadway at Studio 54, is devastating, joyous, even hopeful.
“Kelli and Adam had the same kind of immediate, magnetic draw to the material. It became this long evolutionary thing where here we are now on a Broadway stage doing this show some 20 years later,” says d’Arcy James who also has a thriving career in TV and film. “It is miraculous that we are here and still together doing this, but on the other hand, it really isn't surprising at all.
Brunner: What is that like for you to have a character that goes on such a vast journey? Also, you’re on stage most of the time? It’s thrilling and exhilarating. And it’s also daunting and scary. The great thing about this show is that it's about 90 minutes and there's no intermission. When Kelly and I walk out to start the show, there's no turning back. Once you're on the ride, there's no second take, there's no stopping to redoing something that you flubbed.
