It seems to come down to Robert Downey Jr. being cast as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers film, which Wernick reveals that they were not aware of at the time. However, with the benefit of hindsight, Downey's choice not to accept the cameo part now makes more sense to them, with Reese noting that “I think Marvel had this ace in their hole, which is he’s about to come back in this different character.
