A taxi driver who raped a vulnerable woman after picking her up from a nightclub is amongst those who have been jailed this week in Greater Manchester.
Muhammad Nasir had logged off from work when he picked the 20-year-old up, and instead of dropping her at home, he 'abducted her' for a number of hours during which he sexually assaulted her. He was jailed this week. Also behind bars is Aron Traynor, who is finally being served justice after a raping a 74-year-old women in 1992.
Cold case cops were able to link Traynor to the horrific crime after his DNA was taken as he was stopped for allegedly being drunk and in charge of a vehicle in August 2023. Here is a roundup of this weeks cases heard before our regions courts: A taxi driver ‘abducted’ and raped a vulnerable woman after picking her up from a nightclub in Manchester city centre. Muhammad Nasir, 40, had logged off from his taxi system meaning he was not legally allowed to pick up any passengers. Despite this, he parked up outside Chinawhite nightclub on Deansgate and picked up his victim, then a 20-year-old university student.
Instead of driving her home, he drove in the opposite direction and ended up in Chorlton . She had been on the phone to her mother when she left the club at 2am. Her mum expected her to be home 20 minutes later, but she did not arrive back until just before 5.30am. It was some time during this period that she was raped by Nasir.
He denied wrongdoing, variously claiming they had engaged in consensual sex and that the victim had sexually assaulted him. But a jury at Manchester Crown Court found Nasir guilty of rape and he was today handed an extended sentence for public protection. Ian Isherwood, 43, was also found with hundreds of indecent images of children on his devices. Isherwood, of Shipton Street, Bolton , was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on last Monday . He was found guilty of sexual activity with a child under 13, inciting sexual activity with a girl under 13, inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 13.
His offences took place in the Warrington area. He was sentenced to 15 years in jail. Gareth Griffiths began by making 'sexual comments' to the 18-year-old girl as they both attended the same birthday celebration in November 2023, a court heard. He then 'touched her inappropriately', police said. The victim fell asleep later that night and woke to find Griffiths sexually assaulting her. She reported the 46-year-old to Cheshire Police the next day.
On Wednesday , Griffiths, of Wordsworth Crescent, Chester, was sentenced to nine-years in prison at Chester Crown Court. He was also handed a 15-year restraining order and must sign the sex offenders' register. Aron Traynor, then 22, grabbed 74-year-old Annie Davenport from behind in 1992. He forced her down an embankment in Stockport before indecently assaulting her and attempting to rape her three times. During the attack, she pleaded 'oh God please help me', before begging Traynor: 'Don't hurt me. I'm an old lady.
' Ms Davenport has since died. Traynor, now 56, was unanimously found guilty of indecent assault and attempted rape following a trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.
