A tech-savvy thief used little more than his phone to steal a Rolls-Royce Cullinan and a Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 earlier this month in Florida.
Stealing a car might be one of the few things that may be easier to do in real life than in the movies. The World’s Largest Carbon-Fiber Sailing Catamaran Could Be Yours for $19 MillionBMW’s New M5 Is Now a Plug-In Hybrid—and Over 1,000 Pounds Heavier
Of course, it wasn’t quite that simple. The thief first hacked into the driver’s portal for Dealers Choice Auto Transport Service of West Palm Beach, the company that was delivering luxury vehicle. Then, armed with all the relevant information for the Maybach, they contacted the driver posing as the car’s owner and changed the delivery locations. The thief then changed the Maybach GLS’s drop-off location from Hollywood, Fla., to Miami.
The thief wasn’t done, either. They sent another text that read “Bro, car already in Dubai, or Europe you guess.” This was followed by a photo showing a torn-up area of the floorboard where the vehicle’s GPS system is located. One thing that must be said for the thief is that they have good taste. The GLS is Mercedes’ most luxurious SUV, along with one of its most powerful thanks to a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 550 hp. It starts at $174,350. The Cullinan, meanwhile, may be the most decadent SUV out there. It has a twin-turbocharged V-12 that produces up to 592 hp and starts at $374,000. The total value of the two vehicles comes in at well over $500,000.
Local authorities are currently investigating both thefts. There’s also a $20,000 reward out for each car, but it wouldn’t be that much of a shock if both are long gone.Bryan Hood is a digital staff writer at Robb Report.
