Tory Brexiteers have warned Rishi Sunak that a tough approach on Channel crossings will not give him a “free pass” to strike a compromise on Northern Ireland
on the post-Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol as they believe it will keep the region too close to Brussels.is likely to be finalised as the Government prepares to publish draconian legislation aimed at clamping down on Channel small boat crossings. but briefings have suggested the Prime Minister is open to ultimately quitting if judges in Strasbourg block attempts to clamp down on Channel crossings.
reported that centrist Tories concerned about the move on the ECHR have been told that a hardline approach is being briefed out as “red meat” to keep right-wingers onside ahead of inevitable compromises with the EU on the Brexit Protocol.
