He described Beckham’s Qatar deal as “taking money from Fifa to promote a World Cup that he knows is being run by people who have no consideration whatsoever for the basic human rights of anyone”.

Another fan, Lisa Robinson, 43, from Birmingham, said Qatar hosting the World Cup had made her feel like “it’s been robbed from me”. “You can just see on Twitter, when people put things about football there are a lot derogatory comments coming back from people saying, ‘It’s just football, it’s fine. You’d be alright.’”She described the decision by England captain Harry Kane, and other skippers, to wear the One Love armband – instead of the rainbow LGBTQ armband – as “a bit of an empty gesture”.
