Starmer will face pressure from the left - and right - over spending on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at No 10 Downing Street with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer after the Blenheim Palace summit this week at the end of the year, the Ukrainian leader recognises American support in resisting Russia could all but evaporate.. Republican Vance had previously declared he “does not care” what happens in the conflict “one way or the other”.
In February Republicans decided to predicate their support for the Ukraine spending bill on Joe Biden and the Democrats addressing America’s border-migration chaos. It’s not just on his left flank that Starmer might be compelled to dial down future British spending on Ukraine, as his own MPs step up the fight for higher spending on domestic problems such as child poverty.MPs that it’s “time for the killing to stop” with Nigel Farage expected to make the case for acquiescing to Vladimir Putin should Trump win later this year.
On Friday Zelensky became the first foreign leader to address the UK’s Cabinet since Bill Clinton in 1997. His choice of words was deliberate, a nod to the US-UK relationship when he said he hopedZelensky is used to flattering British egos. When he addressed Parliament in 2022, he namechecked Winston Churchill and did so again at Blenheim Palace on Thursday.
