A number of roads across the North East are closed this morning after flooding due to heavy rain.
Part of a motorway had to be closed and train services were cancelled after heavy rain deluged the North East.
The A1 in County Durham shut in both directions after flooding between Newton Aycliffe and Sedgefield on Wednesday morning. National Highways said the route was likely to remain closed throughout the morning because of "severe" flooding and contractors were worked to clear drains so water could subside.Northern said trains had to run at reduced speed and services might be cancelled or delayed.On Tuesday evening, Blyth and Ashington MP Ian Lavery warned that parts of the county were experiencing "severe flooding" amid "extreme conditions".
Lavery said his office had "taken numerous calls about the serious flooding" in south-east Northumberland. In a post on social media, Northumberland county councillor Scott Dickinson said a number of roads in the Blyth area had been closed, with council teams and crews from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, Northern Powergrid and Northumbria Water at the scene.In South Shields, the A194 closed in both directions between the junctions with Hobson Way and Tyne Dock.
