A555 Road Improvements to Tackle Flooding Issues

Works are scheduled to begin on the A555 to mitigate flooding during heavy rainfall. Recent flooding incidents, including closures due to blocked drainage and water accumulation, have caused disruption for residents and motorists. New infrastructure, including a water collection basin near Woodford recreation ground, is being installed to improve drainage and prevent water from pooling on the road.

Works are due to start on the A555 to try and reduce the chances of water pouring onto the carriageway during heavy rain, a Stockport councillor has said. The road links Cheshire, Stockport and Manchester between the A6 and M56 past Manchester Airport , but it has become prone to regular flooding incidents which have caused misery for residents and motorists in recent years.

Last November, there was a closure in the aftermath of Storm Claudia when a fallen tree blocked a drainage channel at the A555 which needed the help of drones to fix. There were also major problems at the start of 2025 when heavy rain battered Greater Manchester causing havoc around the region. Part of the A555 was left under water with cars seen trapped on the road. But a councillor in Stockport said there are ‘significant’ changes coming which could help ease some of the issues which have repeatedly hit the area. Try MEN Premium NOW for just £1 Coun Jake Austin, the cabinet member for housing and environment at the council, gave an update on the situation on the A555 during a meeting at the town hall on January 29. He said: “There is some good news in terms of work on the A555, we know that is has flooded particularly when we have heavy rain, and I think it was just before Christmas it flooded again with not particularly heavy rain but because there was an issue with where the water was draining from the side which has now been fixed. “There is further work happening which I believe begins in just a few days’ time on February 2, particularly towards Woodford recreation ground, there is a new basin that’s being installed with the surrounding infrastructure to essentially become an area to collect water in the event of heavy rain where it can drain into instead of onto the A555. “Plus, there is a schedule of works beyond that, including work on some of the attenuation ponds on Chester Road which are currently not operating as we would like them to, there’s going to be further works to investigate that alongside one of the pumps that currently gets a little bit overwhelmed with capacity during heavy rain. “So there is scheduled significant works to try and address some of the flooding issues on the A555.”
