The A6 in Stockport will be closed overnight for the construction of a new pedestrian crossing between the transport interchange and town centre.

Parts of the A6 in Stockport will be closed while a new pedestrian crossing is built between the transport interchange and town centre. The first phase of the work begins tonight (January 8) with lanes on Wellington Road closing to traffic in both directions between Exchange Street and Heaton Lane from 7pm on January 8, until 5am on January 9. Signed diversion routes will be in place during the closure.

The Heaton Lane bus gate will stay open during the closure, with southbound traffic on the A6 diverted to the Travis Brow Link Road and King Street West. More overnight closures are planned to finish the work, the council said, with updates to be shared when dates are confirmed. The new pedestrian and cycle crossing will link the A6 viaduct over Daw Bank between the southern entrance to Viaduct Park and the Hatworks Museum. Other improvements include: Coun Grace Baynham, the council’s transport chief, said: “The scheme is part of the council's commitment to sustainable travel and comes on the back of the recently completed walking and cycling improvements at Stockport Interchange and the improved connections in St Peter’s Square that link through to the Market Place and Underbanks. “The new crossing will also provide a link to the Interchange’s bridgescape to the train station and our helix ramp, helping to further cement our sustainable travel connections in our town centre.
