“This is the most beautiful place on earth... now it’s getting a bit anti-social again.'
Mrs Gavaghan said: “This is the most beautiful place on earth, during the pandemic it was an amazing place to be, everyone up there was walking, exercising, it was fantastic. Now it’s getting a bit anti-social again with cars, quads and bikes, you name it.”
Mrs Gavaghan said the volunteer group were already regularly clearing rubbish and fly-tips on weekends, which they then arranged for the council to take away. She added: “[People] are going up there, driving around in these vehicles, dumping them because they can’t get them back down and then going back up a couple of days later to set fire to them. What we can’t understand is why is nobody taking these [wrecks] down when they are left – they are left until they get burnt, it is crazy.
Sgt Sadler said the area had been “plagued” by off-road bikes and a multi-agency problem solving approach was taken to try to stop this from happening. “Gates were funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland near to the riding school, which did stop cars from getting onto the hills, but stipulations on the gate to enable horses to pass through has meant that off road bikes are still able to gain access,” he said.
