The Swedish musician played on some of the band’s best-known songs of the 1970s and 1980s and also played on itsStream the world's best reality, entertainment and true crime shows for free on 7Bravo on“It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep,” his family said in a statement on Sunday.
“Lasse recently fell ill with what turned out to be cancer that had spread, and early on Good Friday he passed away surrounded by his loved ones.Credit:Wellander’s connection to ABBA goes back to 1974 when the then-fledgling Swedish group won the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. His first recordings with Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were in October of that breakthrough year, when he played on the songs Crazy World and the instrumental Intermezzo No.1.When ABBA disbanded in 1982, Wellander went on to play as a session guitarist with other Swedish artists and released his own solo albums.Lasse Wellander on stage with Frida, Bjorn and Agnetha from ABBA.
One of the most in-demand session musicians in Sweden, Wellander received the Albin Hagström Memorial Award from The Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2005, and the prestigious Swedish Musicians Union prize, the Studioräven Award, in 2018.Credit:
