Selena Uibo says the NT government remains committed to a treaty with Aboriginal territorians, after it was accused of deliberately delaying the process.
abc.net.au/news/nt-treaty-commission-selena-uibo-defends-government-decisions/101951056Northern Territory Aboriginal Affairs Minister Selena Uibo has defended her government's decision to abolish the independent NT Treaty Commission and says it remains committed to a treaty with Aboriginal territorians, after it was accused of deliberately delaying the process.
The government has also been accused of attempting to bury the news during a quiet time of year, with no press conference held for the response and Ms Uibo failing to respond to an interview request on the day. Ms Uibo this morning told ABC Radio Darwin the NT government was committed to continuing the treaty process and the extra consultations it was holding were a necessary further step.
The series of forums, which the government says will "test" whether Aboriginal Territorians agree with the commission's recommendations, is expected to run for the next 18 months to two years.
The commission previously received $4 million in funding from the NT government over three years, but that expired in June.

Senior Labor politician claiming to be Aboriginal could ‘very well be wrong’A senior Labor politician claiming to be Aboriginal could “very well be wrong” and now won’t answer questions about it, according to Sky News host Andrew Bolt. Mr Bolt said genealogists from the Dark Emu Exposed website have gone through SA Attorney-General Kyam Maher’s mother and husband’s family tree and “couldn't find a single Aboriginal ancestor”. “Now, I'm not claiming anyone here was dishonest - maybe Mrs Maher got confused or made assumptions that turned out to be wrong or relied on what turned out to be false information and passed it on to her son,” he said. Mr Bolt said he and the head of Dark Emu Exposed, Roger Karge, both attempted to get in contact with Mr Maher’s office but have yet to receive a reply. “It's only right I think that he proves he is Aboriginal in a meaningful way,” he said.
