Anthony Albanese has declared Peter Dutton’s rejection of the Voice to Parliament proposal is an “abrogation of leadership”, as the Liberal Party’s position faces major backlash from indigenous figures.

But the Prime Minister accused Mr Dutton of consistently “undermining” constitutional recognition since he took the leadership of the Liberal Party.

“I think it was a sad day yesterday, because this is an issue that should be above politics, but as Noel Pearson said Peter Dutton is acting like the undertaker preparing the grave to bury Uluru.” The Liberal leader had long demanded the government provide more detail and suggested he would be open to negotiation after he attended multiple meetings of the First Nations referendum working group.

“This pretence of ‘we are up for discussion’ whereas everyone knows that from day one, Peter Dutton, the person who walked out on the apology to Stolen Generations, who threatened to resign from the front bench because Brendan Nelson was showing leadership and supporting the apology to the Stolen Generations, is now walking away from his responsibilities,” Mr Albanese said on Thursday.

Mr Dutton on Wednesday said the government’s proposal represented a “Canberra Voice” and repeated his calls for regional and local bodies which would be heard in a “very clear way”. But the Prime Minister has rejected implementing local and regional Voices, leaving the Coalition completely at odds with the federal, state and territory governments as well as most of the parliament.
