Australia's mushroom industry says there's no chance poisonous mushrooms could enter commercial products, as the big supermarkets say fungi sales are still going strong.

abc.net.au/news/mushrooms-poisoning-leongatha-shopper-fears-after-erin-patterson/102730784Australia's mushroom industry says it is "absolutely impossible" that a grower could produce poison fungi, after the woman who prepared a fatal lunch containing suspected toxic mushrooms at Leongatha told police they were purchased, not foraged.

With the fungi industry growing every year, Australian Mushroom Growers Association deputy chair Georgia Beattie said producers were taking no risks with public health.Agaricus bisporus"We make sure that every step along our growing process meets a certain certification and health and safety standards.Ms Beattie owns organic mushroom farm Bulla Park and supplies about 15 tonnes of mushrooms a week to Australian supermarkets.Georgia Beattie grows organic button mushrooms in Victoria.

Exotic mushroom growers like Josef Sestokas, who sells his fungi at markets in Gippsland and supplies restaurants in Melbourne, said they were bearing the brunt of community concerns."We went to a farmers market on Saturday … the other person that grows mushrooms came and spoke to my wife and [asked if] we were copping it like she was copping it," Mr Sestokas said.

"Having said that, we've got a lot of love still from our regular customers and sold to the same people that we always do, no questions asked."Victoria and New South Wales lead production in a growing industry worth more than $460 million annually. Woolworths has not recalled any mushroom products or removed any from display, while mushroom demand has increased "in recent weeks".
