Stormont departments faced accusations on Wednesday of ‘ rubber stamping everything Dalradian want’ by a community fighting its goldmine plans within a mile of their primary school and football field. The comments were made at the pre-public local inquiry meeting about the firm’s request to mine gold, copper and silver in the Sperrin Mountains . Over 50,000 people objected to the application over a series of concerns.
Save Our Sperrins secretary, Fidelma O’Kane, told those gathered their key issues “relate to the water, the dry stacks facility, the waste management plan, the closure plan, the water impact, the electricity, the fuel consumption, the greenhouse gas emissions, the geology of the site, the air quality, light and noise pollution, roads traffic and transport, the peatland... the impact of blasting twice a day, the habitats assessment, the ecological impacts”. “This is a protected Nature 2000 site and the impact on the freshwater pearls mussels, the salmon, the trout and the otters, health, farming, fishing, tourism, the economics of it all don’t add up,” she added. “The planning issues, the climate change and carbon issues, culture and heritage, language, sacred places, the landscape... the complete lack of regulation and allowing Dalradian to monitor themselves
