They get a respected veteran in Hamby along with a 2024 first-round pick and had so much cap space this offseason that absorbing Hamby’s $165,000 contract is negligible. Even if Hamby doesn’t play this season, she will be a valuable voice on the bench for L.A.
Furthermore, a new league provision gives teams a maternity exception, allowing them to sign a replacement player to a minimum contract, so the Sparks won’t be down a player if Hamby sits out. Zahui B. was a valuable player for L.A. in 2021, but the bridges had probably been burned after the organization suspended her in 2022 without her consent.
