Action Against Hunger has urged for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza as the water shortage in the region reaches critical levels. The charity warns that the current water supply is insufficient for basic daily needs and is leading to a rise in diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. The Global WASH Cluster estimates that an additional 30,000 litres of water per day is required to meet the critical needs of the people in Gaza. The lack of water and sanitation has also resulted in cases of chickenpox and scabies, as well as an increase in pests like rats and cockroaches.
Action Against Hunger has reiterated calls for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza as water inside the Strip reaches critical lows.The charity estimates people are living on three litres of water per person per day, which it says is 'nowhere near enough for people's daily needs of washing, cooking and cleaning'.
The Global WASH Cluster, which incorporates Action Against Hunger, estimates that an additional 30,000 litres of water per day is needed to meet the critical needs of people in Gaza. It said it had also seen cases of chickenpox and scabies due to poor supplies of water and sanitation.'Rats and cockroaches are now commonplace in displacement centres,' the Action Against Hunger spokesperson added.
