The short-life working group published its conclusions today after being set up in response to Fatal Accident Inquiry recommendations.

A group set up by the Scottish Government in response to recommendations made in a Fatal Accident Inquiry following the Cameron House tragedy has published an action plan.

They include measures to be taken by the hotel and B&B industry, with an expert group to be set up to consider if sprinkler systems should be made compulsory when historic buildings are converted into hotels. The hotel operator Cameron House Resort Ltd was fined £500,000 after the incident, while Christopher O’Malley, the night porter, received a community payback order for his role in the fire.

In response to recommendations, the Scottish Government has pledged to amend guidance to promote sprinklers for historic building conversions to hotels, while an expert working group is set up to consider mandating them. The Crown Office initially said an FAI was not needed because the circumstances of the deaths had been established - but a review overturned the decision after Simon Midgley’s mother Jane called for wider lessons to be learned.

“This includes short-term and long-term actions that outline the commitment of all of those involved to do everything to play our part to ensure that the terrible circumstances leading to the tragic deaths of Richard Dyson and Simon Midgley do not happen again.“This report and the changes being made are a consequence of the families’ work to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.”
