TO commemorate the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda , 40 climate activists launched last Sunday a 30-day journey from Rizal Park in Manila to Tacloban City, Leyte.

Yolanda took approximately 6,300 lives, with 1,062 missing and 26,688 injured. Yolanda made several landfalls, including in Leyte, which devastated the province’s capital with powerful storm surges at the height of the typhoon. Organizers of the event said hundreds more are expected to converge with the march as the contingent makes its way through the country. The “Climate Walk” is held to raise awareness not only on Yolanda, but on climate change as a whole, the organizers said through a statement.

Organizers lamented that despite Yolanda, the Philippine government, especially the designated agencies on disaster risk reduction and management, failed to learn from the super typhoon’s wrath a decade later.
