North Texas athletic director Jared Mosley made his feelings clear Monday when the news came down that the NCAA was moving forward with plans to settle a multi-billion-dollar antitrust lawsuit.
The NCAA and the Power Five conferences at the time — the Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference — were named as defendants in House v. NCAA. The suit that was filed in 2020 sought back pay dating to 2016 for athletes who were denied opportunities to capitalize on their name, image and likeness. The NCAA lifted its ban on athletes profiting from endorsement deals in 2021.
“There are a lot of people talking about it,” Mosley told the Denton Record-Chronicle on Tuesday evening. “It’s not just me. If you stay silent in these situations, no one is going to come back to the table. At some point you have to voice your frustration and do your best. The Division I Board of Directors finance committee passed the proposal without the change Monday night. The Division I Board of Directors and the NCAA’s Board of Governors still must approve the deal that was negotiated in secret with NCAA officials and those at P4 schools.
“We are being asked to be a part of a settlement where 95% of it will go to Power Five football and basketball players,” Mosley said. “Help me understand that when we are running a broad-based program with 16 sports.” “That’s a significant chunk of change for anybody,” Mosley said. “The Power Fours are looking at $1.4 million to $1.5 million a year. That is nothing to them. The proportionality is disappointing and frustrating. The schools at this level did not drive us to this place.”
