When the 78-year-old victim does venture from his home, he is worried someone is watching him
An elderly robbery victim is too afraid to leave his house after a drug addict snatched his wallet in broad daylight. When the 78-year-old does venture from his home, his court statement revealed he is worried someone is watching him after he was mugged in Bracebridge Drive, Bilborough.
Nottingham Crown Court was told he heard the defendant had run towards him after getting out of a red car. Ward crouched down and said, "I'm having that", and grabbed the wallet, containing £450, from his hands. The brave pensioner, who has mobility issues, arthritis and diabetes, tried to pursue Ward but he jumped in a car and drove away. CCTV was played in court on Thursday of the victim with his shopping trolley and the red car pulling up between a gap of parked cars.
Members of the public handed police the licence plate of the car Ward was picked up in and they traced him to Lindfield Road, Bilborough. He was a passenger in the getaway vehicle and he had the victim's empty wallet with him. Distraction burglaries on his record involved the elderly, followed by robberies where victims were elderly and vulnerable. On Ward's behalf, solcitor-advocate Benn Robinson addressed the judge, explaining his client has been taking heroin and crack cocaine, and was in debt when he stole the wallet.
