The former Arsenal striker prompted fury when he celebrated in front of their supporters after scoring for new club Manchester City
Emmanuel Adebayor has reflected on the infamous goal celebration for Manchester City that enraged Arsenal fans.
The Togo striker had already upset supporters of his former club by making the switch from North London to the Etihad in 2009, and when the teams met in Manchester in the fourth Premier League game of the season the visiting fans let him know what they thought. Adebayor gave as good as he got, running the length of the pitch after scoring past Manuel Almunia before a knee-slide in front of the away support with his arms outstretched to revel in upsetting them.
It prompted a furious reaction, and was enough for the FA to fine the player and give him a suspended two-match ban for what was described as an 'unacceptable' celebration that 'had the potential to cause a serious public order incident'. The celebration is still remembered as an iconic moment in the history of the Premier League, although the former striker would like to think that Arsenal fans have moved on from the strong feelings that they held.
"I don't think any human being would accept it if people were singing about and insulting your family, especially your mother and father," he told Sky Sports. "I would do anything for my mother and father. "It's behind me now, I hope it is behind them. We all love football. And every once in a while when they see that celebration on television and social media, hopefully now they can laugh it off and move on.
