Adrien Brody discusses the controversy surrounding his 2003 SNL performance where he introduced Sean Paul with a Jamaican accent and a dreadlock wig. He clarifies that the show provided him with the costume and watched the rehearsal, acknowledging that producers may have been unhappy with his accent choice. He also reveals that he has never been invited back on the show despite not being officially banned.
Adrien Brody has spoken about claims he was ‘banned’ from Saturday Night Live for a controversial skit. The infamous 2003 performance on the American comedy show saw New Yorker Adrien, now 51, introduce rapper Sean Paul with an exaggerated Jamaican accent while wearing a dreadlock wig. The choice was made as Sean Paul was born in Kingston, Jamaica. In the 22 years since, Adrien has not appeared on the long-running series, with speculation that the moment is the reason why.
However, Adrien has claimed SNL provided him with the costume and watched the dress rehearsal. He did add that the producers were ‘agape’ at his flurry of ideas for the show, including the impression. Adrian decided to adopt a Jamaican accent. ‘I think Lorne wasn’t happy with me embellishing a bit, but they allowed me to,’ he said. ‘I thought that was a safe space to do that, weirdly.’ When asked by Variety if he was now barred from the show, he said to his knowledge that isn’t true but added: ‘But I also have never been invited back on so I don’t know what to tell you.’ The video has now been virtually removed from the records – it is unavailable to watch on any of SNL’s official channels. Adrien has reason to celebrate right now – he just won a Golden Globe for his role in The Brutalist. The movie received a 13-minute standing ovation when it was screened at the Venice Film Festival. ‘This was an incredibly difficult film to make. I’m very emotional today because I’ve been working on it for seven years and it felt urgent every day of the better part of a decade,’ he said at a press conference attended by Metr
